Felon Escapes From Police Onto Kennesaw State Campus

March 3rd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

ksu-felon-emergency

Today at around 3:30pm, a felon escaped from police custody at the Waffle House across the street from Kennesaw State University. He was being transported from Orlando, Fl to Tennessee when he broke loose from the officer and managed to get out of his handcuffs. From there, he ran on to Campus.

ksu-felon-nature-trail-and-science-buildingApparently he was spotted, or the police dogs tracked him to (I’m getting conflicting stories) the wooded area next to the science building. Which is where I have my classes. By luck, I wasn’t in the building, I was a couple of buildings away.

Then came the lock down. We were ushered into the nearest buildings and locked inside, and crisis management teams were posted at the entrances.

From my own point of view, Kennesaw’s response to the situation was quick and appropriate. They cleared the outside of the buildings of students to allow the police dogs and choppers to work more efficiently while ensuring the students’ safety. The parking garages were the most dangerous places the students could go, so they prevented us from leaving campus.

Granted, there were some hiccups in the system. Whatever the reason, some of the students were allowed to leave before the “all clear”. I myself was allowed to leave the building I was in and wasn’t stopped until I headed for the Science building. No one even told me the situation until I asked a student what all the helicopters were for, despite my passing a crisis management team on my out of a building.

Once the all clear signal was given, it took another 45 minutes to actually get off campus. In this case, it was because the police were searching all of the cars for the felon. We were given a visual inspection, and anyone driving a car was required to open his trunk.

Of course, being a suburb of Atlanta, there was plenty of news coverage, and news choppers were flying overhead during the entire incident, proving a constant droning soundtrack during the situation. Fortunately, that means that you have plenty of other stories to read, so you don’t have to take my word for it.

Rapidstack – For Searching Rapidshare, Of Course

March 3rd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Webapps

rapidstack

This is one of those strange finds that happens when I’m thinking about starting a new project. I was downloading something from Rapidshare and I thought to myself “I wonder if I could scour the web for Rapidshare links? See what’s out there, and what not.” Yes, I talk to myself like I’m in a Sherlock Holmes novel.

Anyway… the point is that I searched to see if someone had already made and app to search for Rapidshare links and, in fact, someone had. I found Rapidstack, a nice ajax-driven search engine. It even claims that it weeds out all of the dead links before displaying the results. I’ve had no problems with any of the links I’ve found, so I’d have to say that it does its job.

It has left me wanting something more, though. Because of Google Analytics, I’m now addicted to graphs. Pretty pretty graphs. I can only imagine what the graphs of keywords from Rapidshare links would look like.

Twisten.fm Lets You Listen to What Others Are Twittering About

March 2nd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Webapps

twisten-dot-fm

Yet another music service using Grooveshark (or by Grooveshark… yes definitely by them). This one trolls Twitter updates looking for Tinysong links, and gives you a convenient play button so you can just start listening without navigating away.

It’s a great way to discover new music. That is, it will be until Twitter becomes so mainstream that all those people from Myspace start using it. Then it’s back to looking for needles in haystacks. Or just back to Last.fm.

It’s only a couple of days before Spring Break and it’s snowing outside. I mean, really snowing. Here are some of the more interesting photos I took a couple of hours ago.

Electrically Heated Pants

February 26th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

burton-heated-pants

It’s like being tased in the balls. Only painful.

I’d need something like this if I ever moved any further north. Seriously, it was 45° F the other day and I was wearing two shirts, a sweater and a jacket. I start shivering when anyone even mentions Canada. I actually freeze solid when Canadians breathe on me. When it comes to cold, I’m a big pansy.

Electric heated pants are a must-have for any Floridian moving north, no matter how ugly they are. And they are pretty ugly. Actually, my eyes have just started bleeding. I’m going to have to look away now.

Also, if you didn’t get the reference at the beginning of the article, you need to watch The IT Crowd. Unfortunantly, it’s only on British television, so you’ll have to download it. And I’m not saying you should get it from here, but it’s listed at tvRSS. Wink wink.

Funeral Candy

February 25th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Food

coffin_chocolate_small_lg

And the strange candy keeps pouring in.

Pushin Daisies, which sells mortuary novelties, has to have the ultimate niche market. They have casket shaped business card holders, hearse keychains, hearse model cars and an array of other merchandise that could only appeal to morticians with a sense of humor or goth kids who actually have a job outside of the mall.

My favorite items outside of the candy are the casket invitation box, the crime scene bandages, and the sleep mask with X’s over the eyes.

Lemon-flavored Urine Candy. Hooray?

February 25th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Food

pee candy

Finding strange products seems to be getting easier. In a surprisingly long line of gross medical themed candies, there’s Formula Pee, which is candy packaged in real urine specimenĀ  jars. The candy is a liquid, translucent yellow in color and sour lemon flavored. How appropriate.

Other medical themed candies on the site: kidney stones, candy blood, and a variety of candies in test tubes, including Uncle Urnie’s Ashes. You know, just in case you wondered what your dearly departed would taste like in candy form.

I’m curious now if there’s a line of funeral candies. You know, to set the mood. Kinda like those penis candies for bachelorette parties (or if you just like that sort of thing).

Off to research!
